Tips For Getting A Formal Hairstyle At A Salon

If you are about to attend a formal event, you probably want to get your hair done at a salon. A talented hairstylist can create almost any style you desire, provided you have enough hair for it. However, there are a few steps you should take and tips you should follow in order to ensure you get the style you desire.

Spend your time looking at pictures.

Dedicate at least an hour or two to looking at pictures of various hairstyles before you choose one. It is common for people to jump on one of the first appealing styles they see when really there is a better option out there waiting to be discovered. A good technique is to first make a "shortlist" of 5 or 10 styles you like. Then, take a break, and give just those styles on the list a second glance in an attempt to narrow them down. Coming back to the shortlist of styles with fresh eyes will make it easier to make your selection.

Tell the stylist exactly what you like about a style.

When you arrive at the salon and show your stylist the photo of the style you want, be prepared for some discussion. Tell your stylist why you like the style and what characteristics of that style you find the most appealing. For instance, you could say "I like the way this style is piled high on the crown of the head and how loose the curls are." Since you have different hair than the person in the photo, your stylist may not be able to replicate the style identically — but if they know what you like most about that style, then they can make sure those particular elements are preserved.

Offer feedback as your stylist works.

Most stylists will stop periodically while styling your hair and ask you whether you like what they're doing. When your stylist does this, make sure you answer honestly. If they say "do you like this curl here?" make sure you actually take a second and think about it — and don't be shy about saying "no, can you put it a little further back?" The stylist wants your honest feedback, and by providing it, you can get the style you desire.

The next time you need a formal hairstyle, follow the tips above. If you take the time to narrow down your options, describe what you like about the style, and offer feedback to your stylist, you should emerge looking amazing.
