If you've never tried waxing before but want to give it a try, then you have to decide whether to have a soft or hard waxing treatment.  

If you aren't sure which wax to try, it's worth starting with a hard wax. Why?

1. Hard Wax Hurts Less

No waxing treatment is completely free from pain. The process of using a wax to pull out body hair is always going to smart a little. However, if you want to keep your pain levels low, then a hard wax will help. Your treatment is likely to be less painful, especially if you're working on sensitive body parts.

Hard waxes usually go on at body temperature, so you won't feel like things are getting too hot. You also remove this kind of wax by hand once it hardens. You don't need to apply a strip to pull the wax off your skin like you do with soft wax. Strip removal pulls at the skin as well as the hair and can be quite painful. Pulling off a hard wax is much easier.

2. Hard Wax Targets Hair, Not Skin

While soft wax treatments are effective, they don't just target the hair you want to remove. They also affect the skin in the area.

These waxes are very sticky. They attach to the skin as well as to hairs.

So, when you pull off a soft wax strip, it brings out hairs and some of the top layer of your skin. This doesn't just sting — it can also affect your skin for a while. For example, the waxed area might look red and inflamed, and it might feel tender and sore.

Hard waxes don't do this. The wax hardens around hairs, but it doesn't stick to the skin. So when you pull the wax off, all it brings with it the attached hairs. It doesn't affect your skin. This is useful if you're waxing sensitive areas like your bikini line or visible parts of your body like your face.

3. Hard Wax Can Work More Than Once

If you use a soft wax, then you really only have one chance to remove hairs. If a strip leaves hairs behind, you can't rewax and start over. You'd be left with more irritated skin and no guarantees that the rewax would do the job. So you might have to have any stray hairs plucked out manually.

Hard waxes tend to work more effectively because the wax gathers around the hairs; it can also pull hairs out from any angle. Plus, you can use this wax again on the same area to pull out stray hairs without causing any damage.
